Types of Industrial Flanges

Weld Neck Flanges

Weld neck flanges are used where strong welded joints and reliable pressure handling are important. The long tapered hub helps transfer stress from the flange to the pipe, making this type suitable for high-pressure, high-temperature and critical piping lines. The bore of the flange is matched with the pipe bore to support smoother flow and reduce turbulence at the joint.

Common use: Refineries, chemical plants, oil and gas lines, power plants, high-pressure process piping and systems where long-term joint strength is important.

Slip-On Flanges

Slip-on flanges are designed with a bore that allows the flange to slide over the pipe before welding. They are generally welded on both the inside and outside of the flange, making them easier to align and install than weld neck flanges in many fabricated piping systems. They are often selected when cost efficiency and ease of installation are important.

Common use: Low to medium pressure piping, fabrication work, water lines, general engineering, agricultural systems, textile units, pharmaceutical support systems and chemical handling applications.

Blind Flanges

Blind flanges are solid flanges used to close the end of a pipe, valve, pressure vessel opening or piping system. They are useful where a line needs to be sealed, isolated or kept ready for future expansion. Since they can be bolted and removed, they also provide access for inspection, cleaning or modification of a piping system.

Common use: Line isolation, pressure testing, terminal pipe ends, valve manifolds, pressure vessel openings and future expansion points.

Socket Weld Flanges

Socket weld flanges are used by inserting the pipe into a recessed socket area and then welding around the outside. They are commonly selected for small-bore piping and high-pressure lines where a neat internal flow path and strong welded connection are required. Material selection is important for corrosive or high-temperature service conditions.

Common use: Small diameter high-pressure piping, steam lines, hydraulic lines, process plants, LNG-related systems, marine lines and mining applications.

Threaded Flanges

Threaded flanges have internal threads that allow them to be connected to externally threaded pipes without welding. They are useful in applications where welding is not preferred or where site conditions make hot work difficult. They are generally used for smaller sizes and lower pressure applications, subject to engineering approval.

Common use: Utility lines, low-pressure piping, temporary connections, hazardous areas where welding may not be suitable and maintenance-friendly piping systems.

Lap Joint Flanges

Lap joint flanges are used together with stub ends. The stub end is welded to the pipe, while the flange remains free to rotate behind it. This makes alignment easier during assembly and allows the flange to be reused in certain systems. Since the flange itself does not directly contact the fluid, it can be useful in systems where corrosion resistance is required through the wetted component.

Common use: Systems requiring frequent dismantling, inspection, cleaning, alignment flexibility or cost-effective use of alloy wetted parts.

Plate Flanges

Plate flanges are flat, economical flange components produced for applications where a forged hub is not required. They are often used in low-pressure lines, water distribution, irrigation, fabrication and general utility systems. Plate flanges are selected for practical installation, lower cost and standardised bolting connection requirements.

Long Weld Neck Flanges

Long weld neck flanges have an extended neck or barrel-shaped hub and are generally used where the flange itself becomes part of a nozzle or pressure vessel connection. They provide added reinforcement and are used in specialised pressure and temperature applications where a standard weld neck flange may not be the ideal fit.
