253 MA (UNS S30815, W.Nr. 1.4835) is a lean, heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel developed originally by Avesta (now part of Outokumpu) specifically for high-temperature oxidising service. Conventional heat-resistant austenitic grades such as 309S and 310S lean on high chromium and nickel content to resist oxidation at elevated temperature. 253 MA takes a different route — moderate chromium and nickel, but with silicon (1.4–2.0%) forming a stabilising sub-layer beneath the chromium oxide scale, nitrogen providing solid-solution strengthening for creep resistance, and a small rare-earth cerium addition (0.03–0.08%) that suppresses oxide spallation during repeated heating and cooling. Together, these give 253 MA creep-rupture strength and thermal-cycling performance comparable to nickel-base heat-resistant alloys, at a materially lower nickel content and cost.
